Cursive W

Cursive w is the letter u with its exit lifted: the same two valleys, but it hands over at the midline instead of the baseline.

Written in the traditional US school model — the looped, joined cursive of the Zaner-Bloser and D'Nealian copybooks, which is the model every sheet on this site is set in.

How to write cursive w

  1. Swing up from the baseline to the midline.
  2. Come down to the baseline and back up to the midline.
  3. Come down and up a second time, the valley the same width as the first.
  4. Finish with a small stroke to the right at the midline and hand over from there.

The capital W

Capital W is the same shape at full height, with a small hook at the top right where the exit leaves.

Where it goes wrong

Dropping the exit to the baseline. That is the only thing separating w from u, and it turns we into ue.

What is on the sheet

    Write three letters w, exactly as in the model. Trace the pale row first, then write the empty rows on your own.

    Write the capital W three times, with a space between them. Capitals fill the full height from the baseline to the top line.
