Cursive B

Cursive b keeps the tall loop of the printed b, but it leaves at the midline instead of the baseline — which is why the word bit is joined along the top.

Written in the traditional US school model — the looped, joined cursive of the Zaner-Bloser and D'Nealian copybooks, which is the model every sheet on this site is set in.

How to write cursive b

  1. Swing up from the baseline to the top line and loop back down over your own stroke.
  2. Come straight down to the baseline.
  3. Curve up and round to the right into the bowl, closing it against the stem at the midline.
  4. Exit to the right at the midline, level with the top of the bowl.

The capital B

Capital B is full height with two bowls on one stem, and unlike the lowercase it hands over at the baseline.

Where it goes wrong

The high exit. Bring it down to the baseline and the next letter starts too low, which is what makes a joined b look like an l with something stuck to it.

What is on the sheet

    Write three letters b, exactly as in the model. Trace the pale row first, then write the empty rows on your own.

    Write the capital B three times, with a space between them. Capitals fill the full height from the baseline to the top line.

    Write both words as in the model, with a clear space between them. Keep every b the same size and the same slant.

    Write the word in one movement where you can, then go back for any dots and crossbars.
