Cursive K

Cursive k is a tall loop with a small knot at the midline, and that knot is the only thing separating it from h.

Written in the traditional US school model — the looped, joined cursive of the Zaner-Bloser and D'Nealian copybooks, which is the model every sheet on this site is set in.

How to write cursive k

  1. Swing up from the baseline to the top line and loop back down over your own stroke.
  2. Come straight down to the baseline.
  3. Curve back up to the midline and tie a small loop against the stem.
  4. Kick the leg down to the baseline and exit to the right.

The capital K

Capital K is full height: a stem from the top line, then an arm and a leg that meet it at the midline.

Where it goes wrong

Miss the knot and k is an h — the two letters are the same stroke from the top line all the way down to the baseline.

What is on the sheet

  1. Lowercase k

    Write three letters k, exactly as in the model. Trace the pale row first, then write the empty rows on your own.
  2. Capital K
    K K K
    Write the capital K three times, with a space between them. Capitals fill the full height from the baseline to the top line.
  3. Words: kite and kitchen

    Write both words as in the model, with a clear space between them. Keep every k the same size and the same slant.
  4. Word: basket

    Write the word in one movement where you can, then go back for any dots and crossbars.

Print at 100% on US Letter — not “fit to page”. The ruling is classroom size, and scaling the page down makes every letter the wrong size; the 10 cm scale at the foot of the sheet is there to check against.
